Geologically, Moldavite is classed as a Tektite, which means it is a silica glass with little or no internal structure i.e. no individual crystals as you see with Quartz etc and has no chemical relation to the rock in which it is found. This is because Moldavite was created by meteor impacts on Earth, specifically in Nordlinger Ries impact crater in Germany.
The massive energy release caused by the meteor impact instantly melted surrounding soil and rock, creating a molten glass. Moldavite can be found as far as 280 miles away from the impact location, showing how far debris from the impact travelled.
